Dr. Marcio Gomes

Dr. Marcio Mendes Gomes is a highly accomplished medical professional specializing in Diagnostic Pathology, with extensive experience in Thoracic and Gastrointestinal Pathology. He holds an impressive array of qualifications including an MD, PhD, MHPE, FRCPC, an academic certificate in Quality Improvement, and has dedicated over two decades to the field.

Dr. Gomes is affiliated with The Ottawa Hospital and the University of Ottawa, where he holds a distinguished teaching position within the Faculty of Medicine. With over a decade of university appointments, he has served as a Full Professor since 2023, an Associate Professor from 2013 to 2023, and previously as an Assistant Professor from 2008 to 2013.

His clinical expertise encompasses critical areas within his specialty, including lung cancer, interstitial lung diseases, mesothelioma, thymic tumors, and upper gastrointestinal pathology. Dr. Gomes has actively contributed to the academic community through 59 key publications and significant involvement in medical education through workshops and lectures in national and international conferences.

As a leader in his field, Dr. Gomes has played pivotal roles in shaping international standards in pathology. He has been a member of various boards and committees, serving as a clinician educator at the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and the Planning Committee for several international conferences on residency education. He was also the Chair of the Canadian Association of Pathologists Annual Meeting from 2016 to 2018.

Dr. Gomes has received numerous honors and awards for his outstanding contributions to pathology, including several leadership, education and research awards such as the Leadership in Pathology award by the Canadian Association of Pathologists, the Robert Maudsley Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, and the Clinical Teaching Award by the Professional Association of Residents of Ontario.

His involvement in multidisciplinary initiatives is noteworthy, having led the Ottawa Hospital Thoracic Oncology Summit for more than a decade, and currently leading the development of Molecular Tumour Boards. He participated in the Regional diagnostic process redesign at The Ottawa Hospital Cancer Program, and is a strong advocate for pathologists to become leaders of evolving healthcare teams. Dr. Gomes has been actively engaged in the establishment of multidisciplinary clinical guidelines and standards for the province of Ontario, notably in the field of Thoracic Oncology, through his collaborations with Cancer Care Ontario. 

In addition to his academic and clinical achievements, Dr. Gomes is multilingual, fluent in English, French, Portuguese, and Spanish. Beyond his professional pursuits, he enjoys engaging in hobbies like triathlon, water polo, snowboarding, sailing and exploring food and wine.
