Dr. Mahmut Akgul

Dr. Mahmut Akgul, MD, is an accomplished medical professional specializing in genitourinary pathology. He currently serves as the Division Chief of Genitourinary Pathology at Albany Medical Center in Albany, NY, where he oversees and leads the division. Dr. Akgul is also actively involved as a Urologic Pathologist.

Dr. Akgul's academic journey began at Gazi University School of Medicine in Ankara, Turkey, where he obtained his Doctor of Medicine degree. He then pursued further training and specialization in the field of pathology. He completed a residency in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center in Cleveland, OH. Following his residency, Dr. Akgul undertook fellowships in Urologic Pathology at Indiana University Department of Pathology in Indianapolis, IN, and in Oncologic Surgical Pathology at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, TX.

With a passion for research, Dr. Akgul has made significant contributions to the field of pathology. He has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications in esteemed journals, focusing on various aspects of genitourinary pathology, including renal cell carcinoma, oncocytic tumors, and renal epithelial neoplasms. His expertise and insights have been sought after, and he has been invited to deliver talks at prestigious institutions and conferences.

Dr. Akgul actively engages in professional activities and is a member of several renowned organizations, including the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology, the Genitourinary Pathology Society, the International Society of Urologic Pathology, and the College of American Pathologists. He also serves as the Social Media Editor for the International Journal of Surgical Pathology and is a Curator for the Case of the Week for the Genitourinary Pathology Society.
