Dr. Clapper received his medical degree from the University of Missouri-Columbia, where he was elected to the medical honor society Alpha Omega Alpha. After finishing his residency in anatomic and clinical pathology at the University of Iowa, Dr. Clapper completed a fellowship in medical and surgical pathology at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.
Dr. Clapper returned to Columbia Missouri after his fellowship, where he worked primarily in a busy private practice but also for a time at the University of MO-Columbia as an adjunct
professor. For several years during this time, Dr. Clapper also wrote The Pathology Blawg, a
website about medicolegal issues and fraud in pathology and laboratory medicine, including
the now-defunct company Theranos. In his book Bad Blood, author John Carreyrou credits Dr. Clapper with providing him with the information that kickstarted his investigation of Theranos that eventually led to the company’s downfall.
While he truly enjoys looking at cases from nearly all pathology subspecialties, Dr. Clapper has a special interest in gynecologic, genitourinary and gastrointestinal specimens. When not working, Dr. Clapper is an avid practitioner of Brazilian jiu jitsu, and has competed in several international tournaments.
