In this session, we are honoured to welcome Dr. Kum Cooper, Professor of Anatomic Pathology at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Perlman School of Medicine. With a distinguished career that includes serving as Head and Chair of Pathology at the University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa, and as Director of Anatomic Pathology at the University of Vermont, USA, Dr. Cooper brings a wealth of knowledge and experience.

He earned his PhD from Oxford University, focusing on the role of HPV in uterine cervical carcinomas. Dr. Cooper is renowned for initiating the Botswana Rotation/Elective through the Botswana-UPenn Partnership in October 2016, dedicating his time to teaching and case work at the University of Botswana.

His clinical experience spans from routine post-mortem and surgical pathology to specialized techniques like Electron Microscopy, Immunofluorescence, Frozen Sections, and Immunohistochemistry. Currently, his work primarily involves routine general surgical pathology sign-out. With over 290 published manuscripts and more than 100 published abstracts, Dr. Cooper’s expertise, particularly in Head and Neck and Soft Tissue pathology, is unparalleled.

Prof. Kum Cooper

Anatomical Pathologist

Dr. Cooper is the Professor of Anatomic Pathology Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Perlman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania Philadelphia, PA, USA.

He previously was Head and Chair of Pathology at the University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa and Director of Anatomic Pathology at the University of Vermont, USA. 

He obtained his PhD at Oxford University: studying the role offHPV in uterine cervical carcinomas. 

Dr Cooper conceived, planned and activated the Botswana Rotation/Elective through the Botswana-UPenn Partnership. This program was initiated in October 2016 whereby Dr Cooper spends two months a year (October and April) at the University of Botswana teaching and signing out cases with the residents. His clinical experience comprises Jan 1982-Dec 1989/Dec 1992-Mar 1999: Routine Post Mortem and Surgical Pathology including use of Electron Microscopy, Immunofluorescence, Frozen Sections and Immunohistochemistry. May 1999-present: Routine general Surgical pathology sign out. Dr Cooper over 290 published manuscripts and over 100 published abstracts.

His current areas of sub-speciality interest are Head and Neck, and Soft tissue pathology.

Prof. Runjan Chetty

Chief Medical Officer

Runjan is an experienced Anatomical Pathologist/Histopathologist specialising in GI and pancreatic pathology, who has held chairs of Pathology in South Africa & Glasgow. He was the Program Medical Director & Chief/Professor of Pathology at UHN & University of Toronto. He also was Head of Translational Pathology at the University of Oxford.
